Welcome

Welcome to the first ETLSO newsletter
for 2008! In this newsletter, we have collected a variety of
articles to help the ETL student body maximize their GWU learning
experience. It is our goal to use this communication channel to
provide the ETL student body with helpful insights from students,
faculty and alumni.
This newsletter features an
article from one of
our alumni, Charlotte Corbett, of Dorchester, MA, who graduated
in June 2006. Many of you may remember her from a class or the ETLSO
in which she was quite active until 2007. Charlotte specializes in
accessibility and her article focuses on how she is utilizing her
ETL degree. I think you will find it quite interesting.
We are also introducing a student column. Amanda Schutz of
Frederick, MD, will be starting it off with an
excellent article on
helpful tips for the ETL student. If you have ever been in a
class with Amanda, I am sure you have noticed how responsive and
well organized she is – a great example for all of us!
Beth Hughes, our Facilitator of Educational Topics, originally from
Baltimore, MD, now living in Rome, GA has
also contributed an interesting
article on how she utilizes
Facebook. If you have not yet had an opportunity to join
Facebook, you should check it out and join the ETL group. There are
many ETL students as well as alumni registered on the site.
Jaime Stringer, our Facilitator of Leaderships
Topics,
from Oneida, TN, presents several helpful hints about
using Flash to create an interactive learning environment.
The ETLSO welcomes articles from ETL students, faculty and alumni.
We feel that shared insights are one of the most valuable aspects of
the ETL experience. We encourage you to provide us with your
perspectives, personal or professional, or suggest any topics of
interest, as well as potential authors outside of the program. The
success of this newsletter will depend upon your input and
contributions. Your voice matters.
Those of us who are involved with the field of education and/or
technology might have some valuable experience and knowledge to
share, whether we realize it or not! Please contact me at
hlowen@gwu.edu if you are interested in submitting a brief article
or column or if you have any suggestions, comments, etc. Letters to
the editor are also welcome.
On a happy, but slightly bittersweet note, Joy Gayler, Spartanburg,
SC, our invaluable VP of Communications will be graduating in May.
There is no doubt we will miss her greatly and wish her the best of
luck!! Her service to
the organization has been invaluable! She has been the glue that has
held the ETLSO together for many semesters. It has been a joy
working with Joy. All of us within the organization would like to
thank her for all the hard work she has put into the ETLSO!!
Joy's upcoming graduation will leave the ETLSO with an open position
as newsletter publisher; we will need a volunteer for this position.
